Successful co-makership leads to unique tunnel formwork

Accelerating and streamlining construction and design processes

When it comes to tunnel formwork with unlimited possibilities, Hendriks is the right place to be. This is once again demonstrated by the introduction of the full tunnel, a tunnel formwork that allows span widths of up to 10 metres. The formwork, developed in collaboration with Red Betonbouw, is being used in the construction of the President in The Hague. Every day, 170 m2 of 'presidential' new-build is being realised.

Located on the corner of President Kennedylaan and close to conference centres, museums and international institutions, the President is rising. This new-build project offers space for 133 private sector rental apartments, 22 owner-occupied apartments and 2 penthouses. Red Betonbouw has been commissioned by Heembouw to carry out the entire structural work. The company is using unique tunnel formwork developed in collaboration with Hendriks.

Volt tunnel
This new 'full tunnel' has a maximum width of no less than 11 metres. An unprecedented span of 10.20 metres can thus be combined with the speed, flexibility and reliability of tunnel formwork technology. But above all, this larger span now offers even more freedom for architects, designers and structural engineers. This freedom is not limited to the design of new buildings, but also offers unlimited possibilities later in the life cycle of a building, for example during refurbishment.

When you say tunnel formwork, you cannot ignore Hendriks. Red Betonbouw, which has been working with Hendriks since 2005, is well aware of this. From the very beginning, the companies have worked together as co-makers. Enes Djerlek of Red Betonbouw: "That co-makership has proven itself many times over. We work together in a goal-oriented manner to achieve a result. And that result has been a success in every joint development. This has led to the necessary innovations, not only on this project but also on others.” Chris van Ree of Hendriks adds: “When the initial plans for the President were drawn up, we got together again. This allowed us to tackle the development and engineering together. As in previous projects, our head of the Engineering department is closely involved in the development. Together, we identified the structural possibilities and limitations and used this as the starting point for each subsequent development step."

Faster construction and greater freedom
The result is once again remarkable: a tunnel with a width of no less than 11 metres. This full tunnel will provide around 170 m2 of floor space every day; two days later, the floor with six homes, including self-supporting balcony slabs, will be ready. The newly developed tapered centre pins (based on Peri's single-sided MAXIMO centre pin MX15) are self-clamping and eliminate the need for plastic cones. After the concrete has hardened, formwork removal is easy. An intelligent hinge system unlocks the two halves of the formwork, after which the formwork can be removed using a crane.

A lot of trust
The new tunnel formwork is a well-considered investment in the future for Red Betonbouw.
Enes Djerlek: “We started our company in the middle of the crisis. From the very beginning, we have always invested heavily in the future. And we are continuing to do so now. The construction industry is booming and the number of requests is enormous. The investment in the full tunnels has therefore come at exactly the right time. As far as we are concerned, the full tunnel gives us every confidence in the future!”
